Gold Futures Charts

Reward charts - do you use them? Do they work?
My daughter is almost 2 and pretty well behaved so I haven't tried reward charts yet, but I would consider using them in the future. Do you use them? Do you think they work? My friend uses one with her 2 year old but it doesn't seem to do much good. He gets a gold star when he is good, and a red star when he is bad but being warned with 'you'll get a red star if you do that' does nothing to dissuade him from doing something! I agree with rewarding the good behaviour, and a certain number of stars perhaps leading to a reward but I think giving red stars or whatever, for bad behaviour, would only serve to frustrate them more rather then stop them from doing it again. What do you think?
I don't think a reward chart would work very well with a 2-year-old. Children that young need immediate reinforcement, not counting stars on a chart to receive some reward in the future. This kind of chart wouldn't work well until at least age 3-4 for most kids, IMO.
Now, I do think that charts can be useful for performing daily routines, like getting ready for the day or getting ready for bed. When my girls were about 3-4, I made a list of the steps they had to do to get ready in the morning and at bedtime and put a picture by each step so that they didn't have to be able to read the words. For a while, I used a chart where they'd check off each step as it was completed, but that became too tedious. Now, at ages 4 and 6, the lists are posted on the wall of their room to help them complete the entire task.
Stickers can also be a great reward for good behavior, either placed on a calendar/chart/paper or on the child's shirt. I don't think the red stars make any sense, though, at least not for another year or two, and they wouldn't work for all kids.
Something that worked for a while for my girls around age 3-4 was stuffing a "prize bag" with small candies/toys. Whenever they were particularly well-behaved, they'd get to choose something from the prize bag.
We just started a reward system at our house that my child's first-grade teacher uses in their classroom. Whenever all the kids do particularly well at something (getting ready for bed quickly, playing nicely together, etc.), they get another link on a paper chain that hangs from the ceiling. When the chain gets enough links to reach to the floor, the kids get a reward of some kind. At school, they'll get a small party; at home, we might have a movie night or go ice skating or to Chuck E. Cheese. The key is that all the kids have to work together for each link of the chain, so not only do they have to be responsible for themselves, but they have to encourage good behavior in others, too. It's too soon to say if it's working yet, but it has promise. (Oh, and I know my 2-year-old doesn't understand the chain at all, but my 4- and 6-year-olds do, so I do give a bit more leniency to the 2-year-old.

Contemporary Futures $74.79 In industrial societies imagining the future is a serious business; our assumptions about the future govern the present management of domestic, national and global resources, and are projected, some would say inflicted, on societies whose visions are different. Contemporary Futures focuses not so much on whether the future can be known, but on interpreting the way we and others picture it. The contributors, all social anthropologists, explore the effects that this picture has on the present, on group identity and belief in the self and its survival, on our relationships with other cultures, and on the future itself. They provide a crosscultural perspective on a range of futures visualised at this time and discusses the implications of Author: Wallman, Sandra/ Wallman, Sandra Series Title: Ideas Series Number: 30 Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 256 Publication Date: 1992/12/12 Language: English Dimensions: 6.14 x 9.21 x 0.51 inches |

Planning Futures $103.47 Planning theory is currently in a confused state as a consequence of a number of changes over the last ten years in planning practice and social and economic theory. Even prior to these events, planning theory was an uncertain discipline, reflecting plannings precarious position between and resting upon a range of professional subject areas and philosophical roots. Planning Futures is an attempt to pin down the constantly evolving landscape of planning theory and to chart a path through this fast changing field.Planning Futures is an uptodate reader on planning theory, but adds something more to the subject area than a mere textbook. The contributors have attempted to bridge theory and practice while putting forward new theoretical ideas. By drawing upon examples from planning practice and case study scenarios, the authors ensure that the work discusses planning theory within the context of present planning practice. Case studies are drawn from an international arena, from the UK, Europe, South Africa and Australia. The Economic Function of Futures Markets $62.11 This book offers an explanation of why commodity processors and dealers use futures markets. It argues that they use futures contracts as part of an implicit method of borrowing and lending commodities, contrary to the accepted view of dealers averse to the fluctuating value of their inventories wanting insurance against price risk. Employing models developed to explain the demand for money, this book demonstrates that riskneutral dealers have sufficient reason to use futures markets. Moreover, the book exposes major internal inconsistencies in the accepted explanation. Rather than insurance markets, the appropriate analogy is the money market, which is the point the book establishes through discussing actual loan markets in commodities. This insight into the function of futures markets is then used to explain how futures prices for different delivery dates express a term structure of commodityspecific interest rates and why futures markets flourish for some types of commodities and not for others.
